Arrival in Vancouver

I've Just arrived in Vancouver after more or less a 20 hour journey from Oslo. My last blog was over a week ago and a good deal has happened in between. Two wonderful concerts with my Duisburgers, Pinchas Zukerman and his lovely wife Amanda Forsyth; then home to Paris for 36 hours before setting off to a snowy Oslo for the last Figaro. Of course family life takes a beating but that’s the name of the  game - and the down side sometimes - of this profession. The up side is that often the family can travel with me or visit in places to which otherwise they wouldn’t think of going. The younger generation is very well travelled these days!

Arriving in Vancouver is always a treat – especially if the weather is as clear as it was today. The vast expanses of the ice cap going over Greenland and beyond eventually – after several hours! – give way to the coastal mountain range. It’s absolutely spectacular and the watery arrival at Vancouver airport (not literally) adds a magical touch.

This production (Donizetti's 'Lucia di Lammermoor') should be a joy – wonderful music combined with a great cast. Expect more in the coming days!
